On behalf of the Guangzhou Institutes ofBiomedicine andHealth(GIBH),Chinese Academy of Sciences,I would like to extend my sincere wishes to all the staffand students, retired colleagues, and friends from all walks of life who care about and support the development ofGIBHat this wonderful moment of bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new.

Time is an objective witness, but also a great writer. Last year was the year of the 20thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China(CPC), an important year for implementing the“14thFive-Year Plan”andcontinuebuilding a modern socialist country in an all-round way, also a year for GIBH to deepen institutional reforms. The past year was extremely extraordinary and unforgettable, we have not only gained the perseverance to climb the slope and surmount the obstacles, but also won the wonderful experience of breaking through the barriers and going forward bravely.

In 2022, the20thCPC National Congress was held and we upheld and strengthenedthe Party's overall leadership over science and technology.GIBH set off a new climaxfollowingPresident Xi’svision ofsocialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era and learning the report ofthe 20thCPC National Congress. We have comprehensively strengthened the Party's leadership and Party building, actively cooperated with the inspection tour of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences andfollowedthe rectification of the inspection opinions, scientifically planed the major development strategies of the institute, deepened the paradigm change of scientific and technological innovation, constantly enhanced the core competitiveness, and fulfilled the mission and responsibilities of the science and technology national team.

In 2022, we earnestly implemented the “Ten Principles of Basic Research” and constantly strengthened organizational basic research capacity.The“14thFive-Year Plan for Scientific and Technological Innovation”was formulated, defining the main priorities and cultivation directions for the next five years. At the same time, the“Administrative Measures for Self-Deployment of Basic Research Projects”was issued, settingup a team of 25 advantageous directions, reformingthe way of resource allocation, highlightingthe“major output orientation”, and promotingthe transformation from a single PI system to an institutionalized and oriented basic research model.

In 2022, we accelerated the introduction and cultivation of high-level scientific and technological talents.We set up a special talent work team, revised the“14thFive-Year Plan for Human Resources”and the“Qualifications for Professional and Technical Posts”, issued the“Implementation Plan for Strengthening the Training and Selection of Young Cadres”,which isfocused on the construction of young reserve talents and young cadres,andselected and appointed special research posts. Thisachieved remarkable results in the construction of talent highlands.

In 2022,we served social and economic development and promoted the transfer and application of achievements.Jiangsu Ascentage Pharma’s approvedanewGIBH-discovereddrug for the treatment of drug-resistant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) -- Olverembatinib, which had a sales volume of more than 100 million yuan in 2022; we also transferredtoJiangsu Aosaikang Pharm'sanew drug for the treatment of lung cancer 120067that has applied to CDE(Center for Drug Evaluation)for approval of drug marketing;Likewise, the new anti-senile dementia drug AD16 was ready to start the clinical phase II studyandthe CAR TLR2 T cell therapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in New Zealand entered clinical phase II.

In 2022, we insisted on opening up to revitalize theinstitute, and scientific and technological cooperation reached a new level.We vigorously supported the organization of Regenerative Medicine and Health Innovation Centre, Hong Kong Institute of Science and Innovation, in order to promote the integration of Hong Kong Innovation Center and GIBH. We actively operated the China-New Zealand“Belt and Road”Joint Laboratory on Biomedicineand Health,whichwasapproved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and held theOpeningCeremony of the Joint Laboratory.

Thisbeautiful scene is formed after many hardships, everythingtook ushard efforts to succeed.In the past year, GIBH has made many changes, many ordeals and many achievements which cannot achieved without the leadership and strong support of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, People's Government of Guangdong Province, and The People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality, as well as the hard work and efforts of all the teachers, students, and staff in the institute. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of them.

Difficulties and hardships made us successful, with a clear direction, and we should not be afraid oftheunknown.2023 is the first year to implement the 20thCPC National Congress, and a key year to implement the“14thFive-Year Plan”. Education, science and technology, and talentbuildingare the basic and strategic support for building a modern socialist country in an all-round way. In the new year, we will continue to deeply study and implement the spirit of the 20thCPC National Congress, unite our hearts, bravely climb the top, strive to produce a number of influential original achievements, break through a batch of important key scientific problems, and cultivate a batch of excellent basic research talents, give full play to the national strategic scientific and technological strength, and integrate the Party organization's combat effectiveness into every link of scientific and technological innovation, sothat wemakeadditionalcontributionsto building a high-technology and self-reliant innovative country.

The picture of history unfolds in the process of forging ahead.The brilliant chapter of thesetimescan only bewritten in the continuous struggle. Although theultimate destination isfar, keep walking and you'll reach the end. When things are difficult they will besolvedifwecontinue workingtogether to improvethem. Standing at the beginning of a new journey, let us forge ahead and work hard for a better future for GIBH, China and the world!
